Gomabai Nethralaya and Research Center/Neemuch

Madhya Pradesh, India 2003 to 2004

The Gomabai Nethralaya and Research Center (GNRC) is an eye hospital supported by a charitable Trust located in Neemuch District (population over 7 million rural inhabitants) in the extreme North West boundary of the underserved State of Madhya Pradesh, India. The 48-bed hospital, created in 1992, allocates beds between free, subsidized, and paying patients. The hospital is well equipped and offers sub-specialty services in cornea and retina.

Beginning in 2003, IEF staff and an optical consultant assisted the GNRC in launching their outreach services designed to serve the rural poor, as well as to improve the quality of their optical services, and increase their sales revenue.

During the first year of activity, 11 screening camps were conducted, and 974 persons were screened for cataracts, contributing to the 2,864 surgeries performed.

In 2004, 69,538 persons were examined at the hospital, and 4,807 total surgeries were performed, 4,219 of which were cataract surgeries. Of all surgeries, 45% were free or subsidized for patients. The new optical center was started in 2004 and is increasing its sales quarterly. All revenue benefits the GNRC, rather than the private business that previously leased space in their hospital.
