A Tribute to Dr. Francisco Contreras - a legend in the field of ophthalmology

International Eye Foundation pays rich tributes to Dr. Francisco Contreras Campos, who passed away recently. A legend in the field of ophthalmology, his work in blindness prevention and visual rehabilitation is unparalleled. Dr. Francisco Contreras had served as President of Pan American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO).

Recalling Contreras’s vast and far-reaching impact on eye care, IEF President & CEO, John Barrows noted "Dr. Contreras was a dedicated and ever-present advocate and supporter of IEF’s work in Peru and the region. He was a Visionary, great listener and always acknowledged opportunities to improve eye care services. His commitment and compassion leave an indelible mark on our hearts, and his legacy will continue to inspire the global ophthalmology community."

Dr. Contreras was a gifted educator and a committed humanitarian. In recognition of his contribution to ophthalmology and public health, the Peruvian Ministry of Health renamed its National Institute of Ophthalmology (INO) as the "Instituto Nacional de Oftalmología' Dr. Francisco Contreras Campos'" in 2017.

Among other innumerable honors, he received the Benjamin F. Boyd Humanitarian Award in 1989 and was conferred with the A. Edward Maumenee Distinguished Services Medal in 2007. In 2013, he received the IAPB Medal. Most recently, in 2023, he was awarded the Gradle Medal for Good Teaching, which was presented personally by Dr. Dino Natteri, President of the Peruvian Society of Ophthalmology, in Lima.
